This book is a hidden gem It s one that you savor slowly with breathtaking imagery such that places vents and sensations are described down to the most minute detail in complete originality The plot itself is slower basically following the random life The Shadow Reader events of a young girl who grows up in a small village in Ira to a British mother and Irai father then studies at a school for dance in Baghdad during the *Iran Ira war and finally moves abroad just in time to follow thevents of the First Gulf War remotely It *Ira war and finally moves abroad just in time to follow the Cinderella Unmasked (Fairytale Fantasies events of the First Gulf War remotely It the tragedy of war from the viewpoint ofveryday Irais what it is like to grow up in a family split between opposing cultural values family death love affairs and breast cancer I loved the descriptions of art and dance as well as the unnamed narrator s brief study of the craft of naming synthetic flavors which was her father s occupation As someone who has had a family member live through a breast cancer diagnosis I found the descriptions of that disease particularly poignant Other books that cover so much ground sometimes feel unfocused but surprisingly I did "not feel that way with this book To me Khedairi s writing was artful and " feel that way with this book To me Khedairi s writing was artful and and she successfully accomplished the task of depicting the bb and flow of a life with all its random vents and connections This is such a good book I really liked it I just didn t like how the main character s parents would argue so much how her mom didn t really care about her This story shares the realities of war between Iran and Ira with a teenager who finds nothing is what she The Power Of A Choice expected When they lived in the country she met a girl named Khaddouja They became really good friendsven though her mom told her not to be her friend she still. This haunting coming of age story about a girl growing up in wartime Ira was the subject of heated controversy when it was published in the Middle East; now in English it offers American readers a rare chance to xperience an Irai childhoodThe frank determined narrator is a schoolgirl living in a small town in the Irai countryside when the book opens Torn between the cultures of her parents she loves the simple pleasures of prov. Lated from Arabic 2001 this is the story of
a girl growing up in the countryside in Ira She s the daughter of a mixed marriage *DAD IRAI girl growing up in the countryside in Ira She s the daughter of a mixed marriage *DAD IRAI BRITISH AND DESPITE *Irai Mom British and despite unhappiness of her mother being in the countryside she has a happy time there The family moves to Bagdad and she goes to Western school ballet and music and adjust well to this life The marriage of her parents does not improve despite being in the city and the mother does or less what she wants The girl becomes closer with her dad learning his trait of naming smells for his company He passes away of a heartattack the war starts with Iran and the story becomes tedious at this point with a lot of military communiue s in it The war is changing life she meets her first love and as the mother becomes sick with breastcancer she leaves Ira and her lover to accompany her to get treatment in England The story picks up again and it is interesting to read how British life is for a non British person A very different book to read because of the static middle part I honestly think the book was pretty boring at the beginning The author gave a lot of specific detail over what her family did I think that s what made it partially boring The book started getting good when her parents got a divorce and her mother confessed to having an affair Honestly that s what kept me wanting to read it to find out what happens to her and if that affected her in anyway I see this author as a really strong person because she had the guts to tell her story and not verybody can tell what they ve been through I think that s what i admired the most throughout this whole book just the simple thought that knowing all of this actually happened to someone is nough for me. Ve affair and her mother's unexpected illness carry her into adulthood and ultimately to London where she confronts with surprising results the other half of her East West legacy A Sky So Close is a captivating look at contemporary Ira from the inside out a stunning re creation of the surreality of life during wartime and the story of a young woman coming to terms with the seemingly unbridgeable cultures from which she is formed.
